Let’s talk about dog friendly cafes in Tromso! When I first moved from the UK to Tromsø in 2018, one of the biggest things I missed was places that welcomed dogs. I was used to a life where my doggie adventures usually ended up including a pub lunch, a warm drink or meeting up with friends, my dogs quietly dozing under the table.

My dogs had grown used to the hustle and bustle of cafes and pubs. People asking to stroke them and waiters giving them treats. It was something I had taken for granted as a normal part of our routine.

More recently, the culture in Tromsø is changing. For my research in writing this blog post, I actually visited all of the establishments mentioned. I was surprised that now, in 2025, there are so many places that openly welcome dogs! (And many people taking advantage of this hospitality!)

So, no longer do you have to wait for the summer months, where sitting outside at a cafe goes hand-in-hand with having your dog by your side. Now, whether you’re a local or a visitor to Tromsø, you can get cosy with a large hot chocolate on a chilly winter afternoon, one hand wrapped around a mug of steaming goodness, and the other resting gently on your dogs head. Your brisk morning walks in the crisp frost, can include a watching the world go by from the comfort of the sofa, munching on a cinnamon bun!

So, I hope you enjoy my tried and tested list of dog friendly cafes in Tromso!

Risø Mat of Kaffebar: Strandgata 32

Risø mat og kaffebar:

Risø Mat og Kaffebar: is located on the cosy little back street Strandgata 32, it’s cosy and welcoming vibe makes it a popular spot for both locals and visitors. It is well-known for its fantastic cinnamon rolls, and has a wide range of coffee including allergy friendly options. It is a smaller cafe and also can be quite busy, so I would not recommend it if you dog prefers to have a bit more space, but for medium or smaller dogs, chilling out under your chair whilst your sip your coffee is the perfect soultion.

Fint Kafe og Bar:

You’ll find FINT Kafe og Bar a little further out from the main high street in Tromsø, Skippergata 1C. I was delighted with how truly dog friendly this place really is. There was about 6 or so other dogs (and their owners) when I visited. The tables are not cramped in, so there is good space for larger dogs or dogs who prefer to stretch out. The staff are incredibly welcoming, offering treats to visiting dogs. They have a great breakfast menu and really relaxed vibe, with pallet sofas and retro furniture. It can be very popular with dog owners, and sometimes the resident dog wanders about for cuddles. Be prepared that your dog will probably end up meeting other dogs here.

Tøllefsenhjørnet: (Storgata 49)

Tøllefsenhjørnet

Way on over at the other end of town (Storgata 49) you’ll find the hot spot Tøllefsenhjørnet. The staff here were very relaxed and welcoming about bringing a dog inside, even though we were visiting at a pretty busy time. My one issue was that even for me with a medium sized dog, it felt quite cramped, and was difficult to really get comfortable. So I would recommend visiting at quieter times, so you can enjoy the expansive range of drinks available.

Hard Rock Cafe: Storgata 42

Hard Rock Cafe

If you have a dog that is a sucker for cuddles and attention, then definitely pop by the Hard Rock Cafe. It is conveniently just over the road from Tøllefsenhjørnet, so if it is very busy there, you have a good alternative option here too (Storgata 42). The staff here are total dog lovers, and were very welcoming, showering my dog with cuddles and love! There is a lot of seating, and floor space, so easy to find a spot in the dog cuddle zone, or a table a bit less central if your dog prefers to chill.

Smørtorget

A retro vibe with amazing food, Smørtorget is a great lunch spot located centrally on (Fredrik Langnes Gate 4).  My one reservation about enjoying lunch here with a dog is that it is quite limited for space, and there are a lot of decorations, antiques and trinkets that could easily be knocked over by a wagging tail. To be honest, this cafe is best for a small dog who could sit by your feet or on your lap, it could be a bit of a “bull in a china shop” situation. So luckily, they do offer take-away, and have outdoor chairs and tables in summer.

As you may know, I am a local dog photographer. If you are living in Tromsø, or just visiting, and want timeless professional portraits of your dog, please get in touch, and we can have a chat!

Please also note that I am not sponsored by any of the companies mentioned in this blog. I also strongly recommend that you only take your dog into a cafe if you are prepared to prioritise focusing on their wellbeing and stress levels, and cut your visit short if your dog is distressed, frustrated or upsetting other members of the public. It is a big ask for dogs to tolerate the noise, strangers and distractions of cafe visits, so please be patient, prepared and positive with them!

Doing some shopping whilst you’re in Tromsø? Hundevis located a little way out of town (Kobbevegen 5, 9100 Kvaløysletta) has a great range of training toys, harnesses, treats/food and accessories for all your dog’s needs.
